Snakes in Palma Empty Snakes in Palma

Post  siva Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:12 pm

There has been several sightings of snakes in Palma and last Thursday a dog had died because of a snake bite (small cobra).

Here is some first aid to do if any unforeseen incidents were to happen :-

    Treatment of snake bites

    DO NOT PANIC!
Do not cut or suck the bite :

    * Avoid all unnecessary movement to prevent venom from spreading in the body.
    * Wash the site of bite quickly and carefully if possible.
    * Wash eyes immediately if venom was "spat" into eyes.
    * Firm bandage over bite site. Bandage should not be so tight that the blood supply is cut off. If bite was on an arm or leg, wrap another bandage over as much of the limb as possible starting from the fingers or toes.
    * Immobilize the bitten limb with a splint or sling.
    * Keep injured person still and do not allow the person to walk. Bring help to the person.
    * Transport to the nearest hospital.

    Treatment in hospital :

    * Snake bite victims will be observed closely in hospital.
    * Management includes local wound / limb care and supportive treatment.
    * Supportive treatment includes pain relief, treatment of possible secondary infection, blood/ blood coagulation factors transfusion, assisting breathing and so on.
    * Depending on the severity of the bite the doctor will administer specific antivenom.
    * Tetanus immunization/booster is also necessary.

    How to avoid getting bitten?

    * Wear shoes that cover your feet and long pants when walking through grass or undergrowth.
    * Make thumping noises with feet when walking in the dark or bushes (create vibration).
    * Do not put hands down into dark holes, dark cavities or cracks in the rocks.
    * Keep clear of dead snakes as people have been bitten 2 or 3 times by "dead" snakes.
    * Avoid going to a snake area when it is dark.

    Hi Siva,

Thanks for the informative posting on the matter. Since our Mr. President Toh has called for a night meeting at Gazebo along 33/38, which is not that far from the incident site. Shall we keep thumping throughout the meeting since it's quite dark in the gazebo and now I have least concern on the mosquito.

Now I remember why all the sudden about birthday celebration and can't make it to the meeting Smile . Oh yeah, now I remember the new season of Desperate Housewife is showing tonight and I have committed to myself not to miss this TV series. Is that a good reason not turning up for the meeting tonight? Smile

    Hi all,
Agreed that we need to address this urgently. The frequency of meeting with this creature is getting higher.
My maid has seen 3 different snakes (black and brown) in past 2 months. We have alerted our neighbours and start putting the sulfur around the house and nearby the bushes.
Heard that there is several case of cobra being observed in Permai as well.
Something has to put into action to prevent any unwanted incident.
