Thanks for your contribution throughout the portal. It's been interesting to read some of your comments and postings which may at times be leaning towards cynical but I'm sure your intent were all well and good. I have to say you are pretty convincing with your writing. But in this case, let me play the devil's advocate to your contribution bout our current topic.
Gorillas do NOT ONLY eat vegetation. Though most of their diet (about 97%) consists of vegetation such as stems, flowers, shrubs, leaves and/or seeds but they do eat a small amount of termites, ants, snails, caterpillar or other invertebrates. It's true that they can survive solely on vegetation, but there's low nutritional quality in just vegetation unless they eat lots and lots of it. (http://www.swbg-animals.org/animal-info/info-books/gorilla/diet.htm)
What more these gorillas live in mostly virgin jungles and hardly affected by any form of contamination. Surely they can stay healthy by just consuming mostly vegetation and that is about 18kg of vegetation a day, by the way.
But in this concrete jungle of ours where human beings congregate, most vegetation that we consume are planted/farmed using chemicals and processed fertilizers. Not only that, we don't consume raw vegetables... we cooked them, and hence whatever vitamins that is still left in the vegetable has been mostly cooked and probably left a bare minimum. So if a 200kg adult male gorilla consumes 18kg of vegetation a day, a male human being (let's just say 85kg) probably will have to eat 7.65kg of just vegetables a day! If we are to eat the way gorillas eat, i.e. eating raw vegetables but purchased from market, I think we die faster due to malnutrition and food poisoning.
What we see served in vegetarian restaurants sometimes make me ponder are they all that healthy either? Goose meat look-a-like, fish meat look-a-like, etc...etc... which in the end of the day, u pay even more for these processed food than getting the fresh fish and meat from the market though admittedly, not in its purest of form either (As u so rightly said it's pumped with growth hormone and antibiotics).
Asides from the diet, exercise can take many forms ... in the end of the day, it's to detox via the sweat glands and burn excess fat and meanwhile build up ones stamina and cardiovaskular. It doesn't need one to walk or jog around Palma park to show one that "Hey.. I am exercising!!!" ... but through social activities like line dancing or other forms of exercise like swimming, racquet games, ball games (ie futsal which is really popular among guys these days) done outside of KU are just some of the methods of achieving good health as well. Just because someone is not sweating it out at our Palma park, does not mean people are not exercising or caring for their health. So to just generalize ones lack of exercise solely on your observation of people at the Palma park is biased and judgemental.
However, at the end of the day, my point with direct sellers or multi-level marketers of health products are that it's all bout the money. Whether optimum health is truly promoted and that these products have no side effects or long-term health detriments from consuming such health products like TF, may not be known. What more with our lack of government's enforcement of control in advertisements and claims, we can't be all that sure that whatever is written on pamphlets of such health products are all that trustworthy either especially coming from companies we barely know or heard of. Just because TF is verbally endorsed by our neighbourhood doctor may not mean he or she consumes it or is all that knowledgeable of the product. So it is with a note of caution for people choosing to eat health supplements to get from reliable suppliers and read the fine prints and leaflets that comes with the product to know what you are about to consume into your bodies.
We can try our level best at living our life to the fullest by our eating habits and lifestyle. Hence as I earlier stated and still take that stand, eat in moderation and exercise.
Hi Tammy,
My many thanks to your compliment on my writings and I am glad you enjoy it. My adaptation skills have driven me to incorporate sensible level of cynical and sarcasm in my writing with the sole intention to attract reader buying my thoughts. I am also grateful to know you are one of my convinced readers. I am not implying Palma residents are of evil minded who are drawn to reading sarcastic comments or articles published with the intention to belittle anybody. In certain extend people are more receptive to the ideas packaged with some amusement value. You could judge me for being manipulative and this behaviour is the offspring of capitalism living in concrete jungle.
Having to read your reply does necessitate my further comments on two subjects, vegetarian diets and the vitamin supplement. Both subjects correlated quite well but the complexity of the subjects do require separate framework of discussion.
I personally am not fanatic on vegetarian diet and condemning people’s preference on carnivorous diet is the last thing I would do. I had been on vegetarian diet for the past few years and since then benefited very much from the well-controlled diet. I have changed since then to moderate diet ever since I have met my other half.
There are great distinct benefits in vegetarian diet that human being could reap from. Again, gorilla is a good example because the body structure, organs and muscle built up has very close resemblance to human being. They are in no doubt also feast on some small amount of termites, ants, snails, caterpillar or other invertebrates and my belief is these are their deserts or snacks more than any other nutritional food to them. I am quite amazed with the amount of vegetables they consume in a day and am grateful that human are not required to eat such a big amount. Vegetarian diet is historical proven and no record showing vegetarians die of malnutrition due to eating less amount of vegetables than they should. Some famous historical figures such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Leonardo Da Vinci, Buddha and etc. (http://www.veganwolf.com/famous_vegetarians.htm#Historical%20Vegetarians%20&%20Advoca) are vegetarians and strong advocates for vegetarian diets did not exhibit any sign of malnutrition nor well known for eating 7.65kg of vegetables a day. It’s a matter of the quality of the vegetables varieties than the quantity of the vegetables. Human race, being the dominates on the top of the food chain does enjoy certain level of privilege to feed on whatever pleasurable to them. Our great great great ancestors started up with vegetarian till they have tasted the sweetness of meat. With the advancement of technology and skills, human race ventured into the deep sea and sky high for any food within their reach. Eventually, when capitalism comes into play, people don’t need to hunt anymore but with flashes of money or credit cards could afford them varieties of meat supply. People no longer reap what they sow in the farm and no longer feast what they hunted in the jungle. These are where all the problems started. People don’t labour anymore but trade intelligence for livings. When people don’t work as hard as the cow in the farm or running around in the jungle hunting for food, why we still so concern about not having enough nutrition? When gorilla could survive very well on vegetables in the jungle, why human beings are still so concern of not getting enough nutrients from the vegetables in the comfort zone? These are interesting thoughts to be pondering with.
Human beings are of creative species that could generate intangible values out of anything. Milks have been known for very nutritious and people can’t live without. Thinking on rational level why cows don’t drink cows milk but only the human? How come cow only feed on grass, wheat or barley and they could be so much stronger and bigger than human beings. We have been well programmed to believe that we need to add more varieties in our diet just to stay balance.
Thinking on deeper lever, why tiger, lion, fox and all those carnivorous animals don’t start with grass grazing before feasting on their prey? All these are because all these mammals are structural designed differently. Human being has much longer intestines than carnivore. Any meats or animal protein stay in the intestine longer than they should will decompose and transform into acidic base toxic. Carnivores have very much shorter intestines that herbivores and human the tendency of left over meats staying longer is less.
There was a time the Alkali water was selling very well in the market because most people body system was running on acidic. When internal fluid becomes acidic, there’s where the bones structure get eroded in long run, body cell couldn’t function at optimal level and people get tired very fast in general. Alkali water makes people who have been in acidic stage stay fresh. However, most people don’t reckon that alkali water is also bad for the digestive system. Our stomach is the only that organ function well in acidic state.
To stay healthy, breath deeply and make sure our body has sufficient oxygen. When people in stress, breathing get shallow and that’s where the cancerous cell gets activated. Make sure stay hydrated and water is the best fluid. Last and not least, our mum is always right, eat more vegetables and skip meat if possible. Meat does not only carry all the growth hormone or antibiotic, it does carry all the adrenaline from the panic and worry in the animals that were about to be slaughtered. That’s why there’s a saying “People on vegetarian diet are typically more calm and peaceful” because they do not consume the adrenaline from the animal.
I am making my New Year resolution to keep up with my vegetarian diet and stay healthy and vibrant. Happy New Year to all of you and may the tiger bring health and vitality to Palma community.
