    Hi,

    Honkit, zero4, Jean Pierre,

Judging from the photographs posted here now and before, you all are quite knowledgeable in photography.

My daughter is interested to take this up as a hobby but due to inexperience and ignorance Embarassed about the type of equipments, so I would love to have you experts to give her some advice as to what are the camera spec, type of zoom lenses, reliable brand and budget range to choose.

Currently she is using a normal digital camera. Subjects that she would like to capture are more of graphical nature (details) rather than sceneries. Unfortunately, I don't any of her photo samples to show you her exact interest.

Your valuable recommendations are highly appreciated.

    Thanks

    JDdots,

Glad to hear your daughter is interested in photography. Thats a good things to start up with a digital camera. May i know is your daughter in early stage of her secondary school? As far as i've concerned that many secondary school students are start picking up a Dslr camera for photography as their "hobby" Anywhere teenager's event you go,many aged between 13 and 17 people holds a camera. For example, I've went to watch Manchester United game againts Malaysia back in July , kids bringing an entry level Dslr camera to snap ManUtd players from their seat farr away about 100mtrs . I was holding my camera with my zoom lens struggling to get a decent shot of them and i was wondering how could they get a shot with their standard lens.

I heard from my brother who is still in secondary school said that some of his friends that got a Dslr camera started ignoring their camera because they're bored with it.

But if JDdots your daugther is really interested to get 1 , probably you could get her a Nikon D80 or D90 or Canon 450d or 40D. These model are slightly higher end that the entry level, its a better choice to get these than those around Rm2000 because those entry models has very limited functions. When i started mine, i use an entry level models and got rid of it after 4 months because its so boring and the picture quality is really bad.

Get her a camera or get herself a camera first then slowly exploring and getting newer lens. Very Happy

Oh beware, once shes into it, Your pocket or Hers will be in trouble! geek

    Photography Empty Skill Vs Technology!!!!

    Post  zero4.bd4165 Thu Dec 24, 2009 8:57 am

    Hi JDots,

i actually not to that level yet to give any words about the DSLR. Laughing

i'm using Panasonic Semi DSLR DMC-FZ30 which i have it with me 3 yrs ago. Well, this model doesn't have many lens can be upgrade, maybe 1 or 2 lens only can be extend. As far as i know wide angle lens can only play around. For me, i like to snap for close up photos
( flower, tree & delicious food ). Of coz this model still come with many functions.Skills VS technology does come along with $$$$$. I would say this is a very affordable DSLR in the market.

i've some tips for this old model.

Panasonic's DMC-FZ30 is an 8 Megapixel all-in-one 'bridge' camera with a powerful 12x optical zoom lens and SLR-like styling. Like other long-zoom bridge cameras, Panasonic's aiming the FZ30 at buyers of budget Digital SLRs, with key advantages including LCD-based composition using a flip-out screen, movie mode and of course a lens with a considerably longer focal range than the typical 3x kit SLR lenses.

And by considerable, we're not kidding: the FZ30's 12x lens has an optical range equivalent to 35-420mm on a 35mm camera. This takes you from a reasonably wide angle to an incredible telephoto - and better still, unlike its predecessor, the FZ30's lens doesn't extend.

Of course it's hard to handhold any lens with this kind of magnification, so to combat any camera-shake the FZ30's equipped with Panasonic's Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) facility - this should allow you to handhold shots at much slower shutter speeds than normal.

It's an impressive specification for a low price, but the FZ30 has tough competition from other long-zoom call-in-one cameras including Fujifilm's FinePix S9500 / S9000. Sony's Cybershot DSC-R1, while not having as long a zoom, is also a key rival.

Then there's the budget Digital SLRs. The Panasonic may have an stabilised long zoom lens, flippable live screen and a lower price, but in their favour, budget Digital SLRs should boast lower noise levels, superior manual focusing and of course the ability to swap lenses.

In this review we'll examine the FZ30, put its optical stabilisation to the test, and compare the performance with its closest rivals, the Fujifilm S9500 / S9000, Sony R1 and Canon's EOS-350D budget Digital SLR.

    Hi,

    honkit & zero4,

Thank very much for taking your time to give me these valuable informations.

Well, looks like I have to dig into the wikipedia the terms in your explanations since I do not know anything about cameras/photography. Only thing I know is switch it on and snap, snap, snap... Embarassed Hope my daughter know what you all are talking about.

My daughter is a working adult, so budget is not a problem. As honkit mentioned, I agree with you that for a beginner who just simply buy a unit and later find that it has so many limitations. If one has improve his/her skills, then it will be a waste(though my daughter can pass it to me when she get bored with it....hahaha).

Is there a "base" camera where it has sufficient features (I mean this "base" that does not require to upgrade so soon) and when requires only we can add on or upgrade eg. different funtion lens, etc? (As you know, technology changes so fast)

    Thanks again buddies,

    Hey Honkit!!

THanks for sharing those photos. Jus wondering do u use ND grad filter for the sunset and fireworks shot? owned a dslr and haven't got a chance to shoot fireworks yet as i only recently purchase a 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens.. hope to get a tripod soon coz my 1st try with zoom lens without the tripod is really challenging. I also have a wide-angle 17-40mm f4. Share some tips on the fireworks...since new year is soon to come and would love to try it out.

    Thanks again.

JDdots, Since budget is not a problem ,then it should be fine. Then probably you could go for Nikon D90 as a starter with its Kit lens that provides zoom range of 18 to 105mm with Vibration Reduction in the lens that helps reduce vibration in low light area or darker area when you are holding it with ur hands. It cost about Rm4000 to get it.

As what zero.4 mention , instead of getting a DSLR camera, you can opt to get a prosumer camera which is a mini-dslr that build in very wide angle lens to a zoom lens of 420mm ( 400mm lens is a very long zoom lens for Dslr which can cost about Rm 20,000 for it) . I personally would not get it because its will make u use it as a digital camera. And the zooming is very slow. Its not that type of camera is not good, just that doesnt feels or make you learn more about taking good photo.

Nikon D90 is a good camera, if you have even more money, you can go for mid range camera which is D300 or full frame one which is D700 for about Rm 7000 without lens.

Of course, you may not like Nikon because you are a Canon fan or a Sony etc. You can go for that. Canon i would say 40D, or 50D or 5D. Price, im not so sure.

After getting the camera body and start to get enough of the kit lens, get a 50mm F1.8 lens which is a portrait lens. It cant be zoom. But it product very good quality in dark as well as taking pictures or people. And slowly from there , you go on to get other various type of lens which you eventually will know what to get when you are in that stage.

Oh btw, you will never stay on 1 body for long as it will have lifespan of 100,000 to 150,000 shuttle.

    Hey tleong,

Congrats on your new lens! Thats a great lens. I got mine, but plan to sell it to get 70-200 2.8 VR2.

I did not use any filter other than UV filter to protect my lens.

    Requirement to shoot fireworks,
1.Any lens that enough to cover the area of fireworks.
    2.Good and steady tripod
    3.Remote control
4.Black card ( a black piece of paper or manila card , a piece to cover your lens.)

A tripod is a must for fireworks especially a good and steady one. Shooting fireworks need a very small aperture of about f 14-20 and a long shutter speed. How long? Well, depends on what you want to capture.
You can use bulb and open the shutter as long as u want to let the light in. Unwanted light , u just use the black card to cover it and open back when you want the light to go in that to be in 1 photo.

I've not been shooting fireworks since last new year. Thought they will have the MIFC at putrajaya in August this year but they canceled it due to Puasa month and even dint allow during Merdeka! Mad

During new year, its hard to find a good spot eventhough you have a zoom lens. I've still yet to decide where to go this year. But i dont expect much because firework during merdeka / new year dont really impress.

Hopefully they will have MIFC next year and its time to go and practice there!

For the sunset, its just lucky to be there at the time. Shot it and play a little with the contrast and WB and got that.

    Hi,Honkit

Thanks again for the valuable advise. I will ask my girl to go into this forum to extract the pointers.

Perhaps if she require additional advises, she will know who to consult.

    Hi, zero4.

What a surprised that you are zero.4...HAHA

We knew each other since sometime back. Some how I couldn't recognized your dog picture as I have not seen him with the long hair. I guessed you knew its me through my dog's picture, right?

Looks like you guys can form a Palma club for photography. There could be more people with similar interests.

    Good luck and happy shooting.

    JDdots lol!
